HS2 contractors are turning to next-generation materials to meet a challenging 50% carbon reduction target for construction of phase one civils assets.
To meet the target, enabling works contractors are working closely with their supply chain to identify innovations and efficiencies achievable by reducing and recycling materials, leading to more than 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) saved to date.
One such method identified is by using drainage geocomposites and erosion control products for embankment stabilisation, trackside drainage, tunnel construction, bridge abutments and green bridge applications.
The design of civil engineering works using geosynthetics significantly reduces transport emissions involved and reliance on using thicker and more expensive granular drainage layers.
