Project Description
The Aberdeen Beach Events Park project has transformed the city’s former Leisure Centre site and the old Beach Boulevard into a vibrant, multi-million-pound public destination. The redevelopment features a new amphitheatre, play park, sports park and dedicated events area.
The events space is designed to host concerts, festivals and a wide range of outdoor gatherings, with capacities of up to 11,000 people. As well as large scale events, the area provides a large grassed space for everyday public use such as informal games and picnicking.
The design of the play area and connecting footpaths to the different theme areas has drawn inspiration from Aberdeen’s rope making heritage and was developed through design workshops with local children and young people.
The Challenge
The events space, including the events field and amphitheatre, needed to function as a flexible environment for both organised events and informal public use. The surface was required to accommodate large crowds, heavy equipment and delivery vehicles (including HGVs) while minimising potential damage such as rutting and wear to the grass surface.
Surface water run off would need to be addressed, ideally with a SuDs compliant system. Specific areas would require a reinforced grass system to minimise surface damage and allow a speedy recovery following large scale events.
The Solution
The Advanced Turf reinforced natural grass system was specified by the project designers due to its ability to meet the performance requirements of the events space.
It provides a natural, free draining mesh reinforced rootzone that allows surface water to drain efficiently into the SuDS compliant water management system, helping to keep the area usable and puddle free.
It offers a high load bearing capacity, capable of withstanding HGV loadings, heavy equipment and high volumes of pedestrian use. At the same time it maintains a continuous natural grass finish supporting an aesthetically pleasing and functional landscape design.
