ABG geocomposites are at the forefront of gas, leachate and groundwater management systems in landfill lining and capping systems worldwide.
Over the past four decades ABG have been at the forefront of providing value engineered geosynthetic solutions for capping drainage and erosion control, slope veneer stabilisation, gas collection, leachate drainage, leakage detection and groundwater management in the landfill sector worldwide.
Research & Development
As part of our commitment to driving forward the standards for landfill engineering, ABG are actively involved with the regulatory bodies helping to shape future policy. We have the ability to rapidly develop and test new products, which ensures that we can supply the most innovative and cost effective solution to any waste management engineering problem. In house research and development is a continual process, and multiple collaborative research projects have been undertaken with various UK universities to develop improved design methods for landfill construction.
Geosynthetics in Landfill Applications
Landfill Cap Drainage
Pozidrain and Pozidrain G drainage geocomposites in a landfill capping system prevent the saturation of the cover soils by collecting and draining away rainwater. This ensures the capping soil remains stable and also acts as a protective layer for the capping geomembrane.
Gas Collection & Dispersal
Pozidrain is the original wide width, pre-formed, gas venting layer. Installed beneath a landfill capping geomembrane or geosynthetic clay liner, it forms a free flowing void across the capped area. This highly-efficient gas collection system also acts as a protective layer for the capping geomembrane.
Landfill Basal & Side-Slope Leachate Drainage
Pozidrain Protector collects and drains leachate whilst also protecting the geomembrane liner from puncture. The large voids spaces present in the drainage core also offer excellent resistance to biological clogging.
The patented Pozidrain G core configuration offers a cost-effective geocomposite with cross directional flow, whilst eliminating the risk of clogging commonly associated with uni-directional drainage strip based products.
Geomembrane Protection
Our range of Terrex SNW geotextiles provide protection, filtration and separation in a single geotextile. The high CBR puncture resistance of Terrex SNW geotextiles protects geomembrane liners from sharp materials found in the waste and angular stone that has been used in the construction of the landfill cell.
Landfill Basal Groundwater Drainage
Pozidrain and Pozidrain G geocomposites below the landfill basal geomembrane or geosynthetic clay liner act to manage groundwater ingress and provide protection to the lining system.
Leakage Detection
Leakdrain used between the primary and secondary geomembrane liners of a containment system not only identifies the presence of a leak, but also has sufficient drainage capacity to act as a collection layer until repairs can be made.
Landfill Soil Veneer Stabilisation
Abgrid biaxial reinforcement geogrids installed over the lining system and anchored at the top of the slope support the weight of the overlying soils and drainage layers, reducing the chances of slipping.Erosaweb geocells are all designed to confine and stabilise cover soils on steep slopes and can either be pinned or anchored as necessary. The honeycomb structure of the product also reduces surface water run off velocities to mitigate soil erosion.
Slope Erosion Control
Our range of Erosamat erosion control matting options are designed to protect exposed areas while vegetation establishes.
Erosamats Type 1, Type 2 and Type 4 are biodegradable and offer various life spans and levels of erosion protection. By absorbing the impact energy of rain bombardment and reducing surface water run-off velocities they give the newly establishing vegetation the best possible chance of survival.
Erosamat Type 3 works by providing an interlock for vegetation root systems, better enabling the vegetation to resist high shear/stress situations. It is non-biodegradable and has a design life of 120 years.
Haul Roads
ABG geogrids, non-woven geotextiles and Abweb geocells can all be used to reduce the construction time and materials required for haul roads and access routes across landfill sites. Our staff are able to offer cost-benefit advice on which is best suited to your project.
Design Expertise
The design and specification of component geosynthetics used in the construction of a landfill site is entirely project specific. Assistance with ABG product selection and specification is available from our team of in house chartered civil engineers in thetechnical team.It is important to protect the environment from both natural and man-made hazards as land is developed, and protecting new developments from existing hazards in the ground can be just as important.
ABG have a range of geosynthetic products that provide robust, cost-effective solutions. As well as manufacturing high performance geosynthetic drainage materials, such as our Pozidrain geocomposites, we provide full technical back up for the design and installation of all our products.
Water management clearly means that drainage performance is a key factor in product selection, however consideration also needs to be given to slope stability, puncture resistance, barrier layers and a whole host of other parameters to ensure the integrity of the site.
Our expertise means ABG Geosynthetics can offer site specific solutions that meet both the regulatory and also the practical requirements of these potentially very complex applications.
