Sudsgrid 40 Permeable Pavers

4,200 m²

  • Source control & treatment of infiltration water
  • Reduced excavation and cost saving design
  • Carbon saving solution

Project Description

Due to open to patients in the winter of 2021/22 and replacing the current building which has stood in Ascot for over a century, the redeveloped Heatherwood Hospital is designed to treat 168,000 patients a year, double the number of the old facility. Once open the new four storey building offers 48 inpatient beds, half of which are ensuite, six operating theatres, and an imaging and endoscopy unit all centred around a double height space and a courtyard.

The Challenge

In order to meet SuDS planning conditions, consultants BDP specified permeable paving throughout the associated new parking areas in order to limit surface water run-off and minimise the risk of localised flooding.

The Solution

In total 4,200m² of Sudsgrid 40 cellular pavers were supplied to Toureen Contractors and installed and filled with free-draining angular aggregate to provide 450 new parking spaces for the hospital. Yellow markers were also supplied to delineate the car parking bays.

ABG’s in-house Design Team proposed a sub-base design which utilises their unique Abgrid geogrid to reduce the thickness of DoT Type 3 stone required to achieve structural stability. An ABG TerrexNW nonwoven geotextile layer was also proposed to provide an additional stage of treatment for the infiltrating water.

The ABG Service

Overall, the incorporation of ABG’s design and permeable paving products provided a shallower construction profile which also resulted in reductions in site excavation, off-site tipping, DoT Type 3 stone deliveries and associated costs.
