Project Description
Delivered over twelve phases, the Sugar House Island project is transforming the Stratford area of East London, creating new places to live and work. Once completed, the regeneration project will deliver 1,200 new homes in total, along with more than 600,000 sq ft of office space.
The Challenge
The project includes numerous podium decks over a 4,000m2 area that link to the surrounding waterways. A drainage layer was required that would provide long-term protection to the waterproofing and that did not require a deeper layer of carbon intensive and heavy to transport aggregate drainage. The layer also needed to be compatible with the hard and soft landscaping design and to support the loading requirements of the podium deck build-ups.
The Solution
A Soprema hot melt structural waterproofing system was specified and installed over the 4,000m2 inverted flat roof deck area. ABG’s Deckdrain was installed above the waterproofing to provide additional protection and drainage to the landscaping. The core of the Deckdrain prevents water from collecting onto the roof and channels rainfall quickly to the nearest drainage outlet.
ABG Deckdrain
Two layers of 25mm thick Deckdrain were installed to provide the required drainage capacity at a significantly reduced thickness compared to deeper crushed stone layers. The Deckdrain also includes integral upper filtration geotextiles to improve water quality and prevent fines from blocking the drainage voids. The Deckdrain SXD option is light-weight to transport and install and provides the required compressive strength to support the various surface finishes and pedestrian and maintenance vehicle loading requirements.

The ABG Service
ABG’s Design Department provided drainage capacity / flow rate calculations and build-up drawings for the project.
