Project Description
Harrier Park, Hucknall is a joint venture project between Rolls-Royce and Muse Developments. The site has a rich heritage in the aviation history and it was formerly a flying school in WW1 and a Rolls-Royce test bed for the Merlin and Griffon engines in WW2, culminating in the world’s first vertical take-off and landing technology and the development of the Harrier Jump Jet, from where the new Distribution Centre take its name.

The Challenge
Harrier Park is now home to the headquarters of RM Resources, which supplies technology to education facilities worldwide. One detail of the build was the provision of a fire access route around the building. A surfacing product was required that is robust enough to traffic a fire engine and deliver a sustainable SuDS solution to attenuate stormwater before it enters nearby water courses, thereby reducing the local area flood risk.

The Solution
ABG’s Truckcell 80 heavy-duty recycled permeable paving system was chosen to provide a durable, free-draining and long-term sustainable surface for this access route. This enables rainwater to drain directly into the sub-base and existing subgrade soils, without surcharging local drains with surface water run-off (SuDS) and requires minimal maintenance.

This heavy-duty cellular paving system is manufactured from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic and is capable of sustaining frequent HGV loads up to GVW 60 tonnes and 10 tonne wheel loads. The pavers can either be filled with angular aggregate, as in this application, or with topsoil and grass seeded. The system delivers the perfect solution for HGV loadings, whilst offering a SuDS porous paving alternative to hard surfaces such as asphalt or concrete access roads.
