Woolwich Royal Arsenal Riverside Residences

Borne out of a dockyard commissioned by King Henry VIII in 1512, the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich has a rich history including military reasearch, weapon proofing and ordnance storage. At its peak the site is estimated to have employed in excess of 100,000 workers.

The MoD moved out in 1994, and since then the site has become a major part of the Thames Gateway regeneration program. Berkeley Homes are now developing the Royal Arsenal to create a superb riverside destination. With 5,000 new homes plus restaurants, bars, retails outlets and leisure facilities, all complemented by parks, beautiful riverside walks, and a rich history, it is truly is a sustainable new community.

The scheme won the What House? Best Regeneration Scheme Gold Award in 2017, and comprises one of the biggest concentrations of Grade I and II listed buildings converted for residential use.

Here at ABG we are proud to have supplied our Advanced Turf System to this high-end residential development. It has been used to create reinforced grass access routes and play areas between the high rise apartments blocks, allowing the architects to design easy maintenance and service access through the development with no visible structure to spoil the aesthetics of the scheme.

ABG Deckdrain has been used to allow landscaping on a number of podium decks, providing drainage without the need to import aggregates, and ABG Roofdrain allows green roofs to flourish with minimal construction depths.

It is great to see such an historic site be given a new lease of life, and utilising advanced construction techniques in a way that means the site caters for modern life requirements while retaining links to its heritage. We can’t wait to see the fully finished project.
