HS2 tells contractors to cut CO2 by half

HS2 contractors are turning to next-generation materials to meet a challenging 50% carbon reduction target for construction of phase one civils assets.

To meet the target, enabling works contractors are working closely with their supply chain to identify innovations and efficiencies achievable by reducing and recycling materials, leading to more than 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) saved to date.

One such method identified is by using drainage geocomposites and erosion control products for embankment stabilisationtrackside drainagetunnel constructionbridge abutments and green bridge applications.

The design of civil engineering works using geosynthetics significantly reduces transport emissions involved and reliance on using thicker and more expensive granular drainage layers.

For example using ABG Deckdrain for the structural drainage of bridge abutments offers a carbon saving of 94% when compared to traditional drainage stone.
